Meat Grading

Since 1932, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Meat Grading and Certification Branch has served the livestock and meat industries by providing grading and certified services for lamb, beef, pork, calf and veal. These services, provided by request on a fee-for-service basis, facilitate the orderly marketing of meats and meat products, thus benefiting livestock producers, feeders, processors and consumers.

ASI formally petitioned USDA in 1999 regarding the discontinuance of quality grading imported lamb carcasses. Department representatives told ASI board members in February 2003 that congressional authorization would be required to effect such a change.
