Heritage Foundation Looks to 2015

The 2015 celebration of the American Sheep Industry’s 150th anniversary in Reno is slated to be a big boon to ASI’s Sheep Heritage Foundation.

“This is a one-time opportunity, and we are looking for $150,000 for this organization,” said Pierce Miller, foundation president.

To fulfill that goal, the foundation commissioned Pendleton Woolen Mills to fabricate nearly 200 blankets to commemorate the 150th anniversary, each numbered in a limited edition, and several hundred pillow sets with the ASI logo, for sale as a fundraiser for the foundation.

Foundation members, the former presidents of ASI, set prices for the Pendleton blankets and throw pillows at their meeting in Charleston.

• $175 for an individual pillow
• $300 for a pair of pillows
• $750 for a single blanket
• $1,000 for the entire set

In addition, the foundation is soliciting art, bronzes and jewelry for auction during the 150th anniversary celebration at the ASI January 2015 convention in Reno.

“We’re encouraging state associations to consider finding a local artist to offer something for sale as a fundraiser,” said Miller.

For example, he said, Ben Nighthorse Campbell, former U.S. Senator from Colorado now a full-time maker of fine jewelry, has already crafted and provided to ASI a bracelet for auction. And he plans to attend the 150-year convention in Reno.

Miller reported that the foundation currently has more than $60,000 in assets, with $13,600 contributed in 2013, noting support of the Meike brothers, Don and Peto.

“Please remember the Sheep Heritage Foundation,” he said, “and send a memorial donation, in the name of those of have gone before us, to ASI on behalf of the foundation.”

The foundation is tax deductible and currently provides scholarships to graduate students studying sheep science.
