Footvax Vaccine Inquiry
January 20, 2012
The Footvax vaccine was discontinued for sale in the United States and has not been available for several months. The American Sheep Industry Association (ASI) and the California Wool Growers Association (CWGA) have had several discussions with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and with the vaccine manufacturing company (Intervet/Schering-Plough/Merck) over the past year encouraging them to resume licensed sales.
There seems to be a glimmer of hope that an interim solution is in the works. Although it has not been officially approved or licensed for U.S. sale, USDA may grant the manufacturer the ability to import the product into the United States for limited distribution and research purposes under special permits.
The vaccine manufacturer and USDA sought a central U.S. contact to collect producers' orders. The CWGA is willing to provide this service and will work with USDA and the vaccine company to help import the amount of product needed by U.S. producers.
The cost per dose is currently being estimated at $2.50, although it may be higher or lower. In most cases, it takes two doses per sheep--an initial shot and a booster. The time frame for importation is unknown; however, the best case scenario could be within the next two months. Therefore, Intervet would like a dosage count within the next two weeks.
If you are interested in ordering the Footvax product, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 916-444-8122 and let the CWGA know the number of doses that you would like to order along with your name, mailing address, phone number and email address.
The CWGA will prepare a master list. Once confirmation is received from USDA that the product can be imported for U.S. use, those producers who requested product will be notified.
The distribution channels are not yet clearly determined. As details become available, producers will be contacted to confirm what entity within each state can provide the product.
