Montana Program to Discuss Genetics

Montana Program to Discuss Genetics

An interactive producer program focused on common sense genetic selection will take place at the Fort Keogh Livestock and Range Research Center in Miles City, Mont., on Sept. 16, beginning at 10 a.m.

Speakers include Dr. Dave Notter, Virginia Tech University; Rusty Burgett, National Sheep Improvement Program; Lesa Eidman, Superior Farms; and Dr. Whit Stewart, Montana State University. Interactive clicker technologies will engage and help survey commercial and purebred producers perceptions of emerging technologies.
Come early for the educational program and put that knowledge to use selecting replacement ewe lambs and rams. More than 900 yearling ewes and ewe lambs will be offered following the producer program at the Eastern Montana Fairgrounds at
6 p.m. Three hundred rams, the majority of which will have breeding values, will sell Sept. 17.
Producers will learn how estimated breeding values are a useful tool in making ram selections for the commercial sector. Using rams with the right EBVs, a shepherd can improve the production traits that have the biggest impact on profitability. This presentation will outline how to analyze a producer’s current production level, set goals for improving production and how to select the next breeding animals based on EBVs from NSIP.
