Will LPDs Deter Bighorn Sheep?
March 16, 2012
The Wyoming Wool Growers Association made a request to the American Sheep Industry Association’s Executive Board regarding the use of livestock protection dogs (LPD) as deterrents to the co-mingling of domestic and bighorn sheep.
At its February meeting, the board unanimously approved and supported the research to determine if the presence of LPDs actively guarding domestic sheep flocks might also serve as a deterrent or hindrance towards wandering bighorn sheep seeking to co-mingle with domestic sheep.
Since the Agricultural Research Service and Washington State University are currently leading the research on the disease issues related to wild and domestic sheep, a request has been made of them to include this request within the disease risk model research that is already underway.
