Scrapie Reports Available
January 13, 2017
The National Scrapie Eradication Program annual report for FY 2016, as well as the November 2016 monthly report are now available.
In FY 2016, which ended Sept. 30, 2016, more than 40,000 sheep and goats were tested for scrapie with only 13 animals confirmed positive for classical scrapie. The last case of scrapie was reported in April 2016. Only two infected and three source flocks were identified in FY 2016.
No new positive classical scrapie cases have been reported in either sheep or goats in FY 2017 nor have any new infected or source flocks been identified.
Did you know? Samples for scrapie surveillance were collected from targeted sheep and goats at 179 sites in 39 states. In 2005, there were 180 infected and source flocks in the country! Great progress has been made to eradicate this disease.
